Otsukimi
Moonviewing Festival
EVENT
November 8th and 9t
In Japan, the arrival of the full moon in early autumn has long been a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate. This seasonal tradition, known as Otsukimi (literally “moon-viewing”), invites people to admire the beauty of the moon at its brightest and most serene.
What is Otsukimi?
Otsukimi (お月見) dates back over a thousand years to the Heian period (794–1185), when courtiers would gather to compose poetry and enjoy the harvest moon reflected on water. Influenced by ancient Chinese customs and adapted into a uniquely Japanese tradition, Otsukimi has grown into a widespread practice that combines aesthetic appreciation with spiritual gratitude.
Our annual Otsukimi Moon Viewing honors this tradition through a curated evening of Japanese arts, performances, and seasonal flavors. Wander lantern- and bamboo-lit paths beneath the moonlight and experience the depth of Japanese culture in the serene setting of the Garden.
Over time, the celebration came to include offerings to the moon, such as tsukimi dango (white rice dumplings), seasonal vegetables, and arrangements of susuki (pampas grass)—symbols of a bountiful harvest and wishes for health and prosperity.
Otsukimi is both contemplative and communal—a moment to enjoy seasonal beauty, honor nature’s cycles, and share peaceful time together under the moonlight.

Chiemi’s intricate weaving patterns reflect Kyoto’s refined aesthetics, deeply rooted in the traditions of shokunin craftsmanship and the philosophy of the tea ceremony. Without a family lineage in the craft, she has forged her own path, blending heritage techniques with modern design to create a unique artistic voice that resonates across generations.
