Crape Myrtle
Lagerstroemia. Disidious, evergreen tree or shrub.
Red, pink or white blooms that blossom all summer long.
Called Monkey Slip (saru suberi- 猿滑) which refers to its sleek bark or 百日紅 "red for one hundred days" because of the length of it's blooming season.

Plum Tree
Prunus, multiple species.. Small to medium rugged tree. Small white flowers bloom in March.

Anacacho orchid Tree
Bauhinia Lunarioides.
White flowering, small leaved large shrub or small tree. Flowers March through April.
Reminiscent of Cherry Blossoms.

RedBud Tree
Cercis, multiple species.
Single or multi trunk small tree that blooms end of February into March. Pink/purple flowers blossom before leaves emerge.
Shade tolerant, graceful and elegant. Reminiscent of plum blossoms.

Ficus Tree
Ficus Benjamina. Large growing, desert adapted tree. Creates the forest-like setting in the mountain region. Also the iconic tree located next to the tea house.

Dwarf/Compact Myrtle
Myrtus Communis Compacta.
Drought tolerant, dark green, fine textured shrub. White or pink flowering, sometimes followed by blue colored berries. Easily sheared to create karikomi and tamamono shapes in the Garden.

Dwarf Yaupon Holly
Ilex Vomitoria ‘Nana’.
Drought tolerant, slow growing, dark green, fine textured shrub. Inconspicuous white flowers. Easily sheared to create karikomi and tamamono shapes in the Garden.

Indian Hawthorn
Rhaphiolepis Indica, multiple species.
Small to medium, pink or white flowering shrub adaptable to sun or shade. A substitute for Japanese Azalea.

Mock Orange
Pittosporum. Highly shade tolerant, fragrant flowering medium to large shrubs. Common name derived from the similarity in its flowers scent to orange blossoms.
Used throughout the mountain region.

Texas Mountain Laurel
Sophora Secundiflora.
Purple flowering, glossy leafed, large shrub or small tree. Showy purple blossoms that smell like grape soda.

Chinese Ground Orchid
Bletilla Striata.
Stunning purple pink blooms rising above blade-like foliage.
