About the Event
Last admission is 7:30pm. The garden will close at 8:30 pm.
While Obon is traditionally observed in August in Japan, Arizona’s summer heat invites us to gather outdoors in May, when we can comfortably share this meaningful cultural experience beneath the desert sky. This seasonal adaptation allows our Phoenix community to come together in remembrance, reflection, and connection.
As twilight falls, guests may take part in Shōrō Nagashi by sending illuminated lanterns across our pond. Each lantern carries heartfelt messages of gratitude, love, and remembrance, creating a serene and moving scene of light upon the water. Please note: participation in the lantern-floating ceremony requires an additional fee.
We will also join in traditional Obon dancing, hosted by the Arizona Buddhist Temple. Through simple, graceful movements performed together in a circle, we celebrate life, express appreciation for those who came before us, and strengthen bonds within our community.
