About the Event

Celebrate Children's Day at the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix with a workshop surrounding some of the most popular toys in Japan – Gundam! This Gundam introductory workshop will allow guests to learn about the history of Gundams in Japan, from toys to anime, and how to get started in the hobby.

Guests will also get to make their own Gundam using official Bandai model kits. These kits are recommended by the manufacturer for ages 15 and up, unless assisted by a parent or guardian. The kit includes all materials needed to put together your Gundam fighting robot, as well as stickers to add to it. Any additional materials will be provided by the Garden (nippers, tweezers). The best part is – this Gundam is yours to take home!

While this is an introductory class, Gundam enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Guests are also welcome to bring their own materials including Gundam markers, weathering materials, and more. Come take part in the fun of building these articulate figures, and meet new friends with similar interests, only at the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix’s Gundam Introductory Workshop!

Garden Admission is included with purchase of Gundam Introductory Workshop Ticket.

Instructor Bio

Michio Kuroda from Himeji, Japan is 18 years of Gundam Fun since he is from 6 years old. He is currently pursuing a Master of Global Management degree (STEM) at the Arizona State University Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Gundam is characterized by its unusually realistic depictions, and it is a deep human drama, particularly regarding the pilots' emotions and way of life. Additionally, the combat scenes featuring various mobile suits are impressive for their intense action. While portraying the tragedy and meaninglessness of violence in war, Gundam also highlights the potential and hope of humanity. Its message has been loved by many people across generations.

I have been familiar with Gundam since I was in kindergarten. I was particularly impressed by the main character's growth and the drama surrounding the war, and I learned many things from it. Gundam is not just a science fiction anime but a work that conveys important messages to us, and I am convinced of that.
