About the Event
What makes a Japanese garden look like a Japanese garden?
Explore the art of Japanese gardening with our Garden Workshop Series, led by our Garden Curator, Ben Schrepf. This series uncovers the traditional techniques that define Japanese gardens, thoughtully adapted for our desert climate.
Each workshop focuses on essential aspects of Japanese gardening, from precise pruning techniques to constructing bamboo fencing and benches. You'll gain hands-on experience with methods like Japanese pruning, organic topiary, and the Sukashi (thinning) technique, along with guidance on selecting the right tools and rejuvenating older plant material.
Each workshop is stand-alone, allowing you to learn and benefit from any one of them individually.
Topics covered include:
- Japanese Garden Concepts: Understanding the foundational principles.
- Japanese Pine Pruning: Essential skills for maintaining these iconic trees.
- Shrubs and Topiary: Techniques for both formal and organic shaping.
- Sukashi Technique: Thinning for plant health and aethestic appeal.
- Garden Structures: building bamboo fencing and benches to enchance your garden
Join us for a unique learning experience that will equip you with the skills to create your own Japanese-style garden, even in a desert environment. Come with your questions and enthusiasm for a rewarding learning journey.
