Chiemi Ogura / 小倉智恵美

Chiemi Ogura is a bamboo weaving artist who lives and work in Kyoto. Japanese bamboo weaving, passed down since the Jomon period, is rich in aesthetic value, known for diverse geometric patterns. Operating the workshop "Kyotakegō Hana Kokoro" in a traditional machiya in Kyoto, Ogura focuses on crafting pieces that reflect both heritage and modernity. Splitting bamboo is a demanding physical task that was believed to be traditionally reserved for men. Ogura explores the delicate beauty and femininity in bamboo, creating lace-like expressions and accessories that can be worn and enjoyed in everyday life.

Special Workshop and Haru in the Garden Bundle $85 Adult / $80 Youth / $75 Members (Includes Event Admission) Limited to 12 seats As part of Haru in the Garden, our annual spring celebration of Japanese culture, we are honored to present a special workshop with Chiemi Ogura, a Kyoto-based artisan redefining traditional weaving techniques. Chiemi’s intricate weaving patterns reflect Kyoto’s refined aesthetics, deeply rooted in the traditions of shokunin craftsmanship and the philosophy of the tea ceremony. This exclusive workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to learn directly from Chiemi. Through a lecture, hands-on demonstration, and guided practice, attendees will gain insight into the discipline and precision of Kyoto weaving. A tea service intermission will offer a moment of reflection, followed by a Tea Garden tour to deepen the connection between craft, nature, and tradition.
