About the Event
Aikido is based in part on the ancient sword and staff traditions of the samurai in Japanese history. Take part in the wooden sword (bokken) and staff (jo) training forms studied by current followers of the Japanese martial art of aikido.
One of the immediate benefits of the jo is its ability to help us stretch when we warm up at the beginning of class. You will see that we can move parts of the body a bit further than if we stretch unaided by this handy piece of wood!
You will learn how to move forward and backward with both weapons as well as how to pivot and duck at the right moment. These exercises will help in maintaining balance, improve mind & body awareness, encourage correct breathing among other benefits.
Finally, we will explore meditation techniques that will enhance stress reduction and a calm spirit. Weapons will be supplied by Arizona Aikido. Casual outdoor clothing is recommended and footwear that won’t slip off will be important.
